UndabasoThis project has been managed by the Lurgaia Foundation for over ten years in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve in the Basque Country. Its aim is to recover the indigenous vegetation of the area. Lurgaia accesses the land through a land custody scheme, acquiring land through donations, agreements with local landowners or purchase, and then plants native species of trees and shrubs. Volunteers are essential to this project, which is a community effort to improve the local environment. Different densities of mixed species are planted without clearing and with minimum intervention in order to make the regeneration process as natural as possible. Currently, 100 out of a potential 153 hectares are being planted with 600 trees per hectare, all indigenous species typical of the local ecosystems. The genetics and origin of the trees is carefully studied in order to ensure optimal adaptation. Furthermore, the project aims to encourage coexistence between humans and bears by organising training sessions and meetings with the resident community. Local labour is employed in order to help the local economy.
