This forest, located in the hills of Courel in the province of Lugo, is the first forest in Spain and only the second in Europe to receive certification of its ecosystem from the international organisation Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for the "exemplary sustainable management of its resources", as well as " the conservation of its biodiversity". The company ASEFOR was responsible for the preparation of the area for certification, as an incentive to increase both the value of the forest and the local economy. The neighbouring communities are now involved in the conservation and protection of the forest aiming for the recuperation of silvopastoral systems, in order to provide an opportunity for more livestock and thus a better livelihood for the inhabitants of the region as well as preventing forest fires.
