Since 1992, the Brown Bear Foundation (FOP) has been carrying out actions for the conservation and restoration of habitats of interest for the species, monitoring of the bear population, research applied to management, the fight against poaching and environmental training and education. In the area of action of the Brown Bear Defragmentation project, in León, conservation and ecosystem restoration actions are carried out, including reforestation with the aim of creating scattered copses that serve to provide food for the bears and develop corridors to facilitate connectivity between bear populations. In the project, 16,953 native fruit trees of different species were planted on 23.9 ha and 78,289 native trees and shrubs, forming 237 connectivity, canalisation and enrichment copses with a total surface area of 100 hectares. In addition, the project seeks to promote coexistence between human activities and bears, to carry out training activities with the social actors of the territory, and to contribute to economic development through the use of local labour.
