La Burgalesa

The project, developed by CO2Revolution, consists of the reforestation of 22.21 ha distributed in the municipalities of Tubilla del Lago, Caleruega and Villalvilla de Gumiel, in the province of Burgos. This is a moorland area with limestone soils and abundant chalky loam, summer aridity and extreme temperatures, soils with average slopes of over 30%, shallow, devoid of vegetation, where erosive processes and abundance of rabbits can be seen. A mixed plantation of coniferous and leafy trees was planted at a density of 1,600 ft/ha (70% Pinus pinea, 7.5% Quercus faginea, 7.5% Quercus ilex, 5% Pinus halepensis, 5% Crataegus monogyna and 5% Juniperus thurifera) in an irregular 3x2 frame. It has not been necessary to previously clear most of the area, and the opening of holes has been done by mechanized hollowing with a chain tractor, except in a small area of lower slopes where a linear subsoiling has been carried out. The main objective of the planting is to halt erosion processes and increase biodiversity. This is an eminently agricultural area with a high ethnographic value that suffers from depopulation, with an economy based on rural tourism and agriculture. There is some sheep farming, as well as hunting activity. The expected absorptions for a period of 40 years are 6,362 t CO2 eq, with 1,126 t CO2 eq available, of which 30 t CO2 eq have already been withdrawn. The plots have a Management Plan with a time horizon of 40 years in which the planned works have been the replacement of the stubble and penetration pruning.
