The Kataska Project located in the Urkiola Natural Park (Bizkaia), managed by the Lurgaia Foundation, consists of planting autochthonous vegetation in an unused agricultural area. Lurgaia gains access to the land through Land Stewardship, acquiring land by donation, purchase and sale or agreements with landowners. Subsequently, with the support of volunteers, it plants native species of trees and shrubs, thus making society a protagonist in the improvement of the environment. Lurgaia's philosophy is that of minimum intervention during the regeneration process, planting is carried out with different densities and alternating species, without clearing, emulating, as far as possible, Nature. After the clearing and fencing work, planting was carried out at a density of around 1100 ft/ha. Plantings were carried out from 2012 to 2015, planting pioneer species such as Betula spp and Corylus avellana and climax species such as Fraxinus sp and Quercus robur, as well as a series of shrubs such as Ilex aquifolium, Crataegus spp, Cornus sanguinea and Malus sylvestris and other species typical of the area that appear alternately, such as Prunus spp.
